5 unique birthday ideas for kids in Mumbai

Every year, when my little one’s birthday approaches I go a little frantic looking for new ideas to celebrate her birthday. For her first birthday I kept the theme Marshmallows and candies where she and her friends (all tiny-tots) enjoyed it a lot. Even adults loved it. But what next? Now let’s be honest, we are kind of bored with the Jungle themes and the party organisers making us jump to Bollywood tunes and making us play similar games at all the birthday parties. So what else can be planned for the birthday girl/boy? Mumbaigloss decided to list 5 uncommon ideas which might help you plan your darling’s next birthday.

1. Masterchef Birthday Party

Palate Culinary Studio, Masterchef birthday

Palate Culinary Studio by Rakhee Vaswani conducts Masterchef Birthday parties for the kids. In these parties, kids are engaged in DIY (Do-It-Yourself) activities. Parents can choose from different activities based on their child’s age and their budget. Parents can also order a small recipe booklet and apron customized with the birthday boy/girl’s name. A photo-session with bowls, rolling pins, aprons, etc. is organized for the kids attending the party. Easy quiz session is arranged where the kids need to recognize simple ingredients like sugar, oil, salt, yeast, etc. The packages start from Rs.1000/child and may include pizzas, mini-pizzas, chocolate cookies, cupcakes, icing on vanilla cookies, etc. Several advanced packages include quesadillas, burgers, pasta, brownies, cake pop, fondue party, etc.  Cake and refreshments are charged extra. For example once the kids are done with the activity, they can enjoy snacks available at Palate Culinary Studio like pasta, quiches, sandwiches, etc.

2. Salon Makeover Birthday Party

Starfish Kids Salon, birthday party ideas Mumbai

Just the way we love getting pampered, young girls love getting pampered too. If you see a little diva in your daughter or a grooming guru in your son then arrange for a Salon Birthday party. Starfish Kids Salon organizes such birthday parties where your little ones can get some pampering like manicures, pedicures, hair art, nail art, hairstyles, etc. It is a fun way of bonding with the friends as well as makes them aware about grooming etiquette from an early age. Parents can chose from a variety of options; for girls there is hair styling to nail art or mani and pedi. For boys parents can opt for razor styles, gel styling and hand and feet clean up, etc. The cost is between Rs. 600 to 900 depending on the services chosen (food not included). But for a charge, cake cutting and snacks can be arranged.

3. Movie Screening Birthday Party

Children love movies, be it animation or otherwise. And if you see that your child has been eagerly waiting for the next Marvel release or is a great Batman movie fan, then you can arrange for a special screening of a movie at Eros ‘The Preview’ cinema.  It is a fully air conditioned private cinema located on the 2nd floor of the building. It is well appointed with over 40 comfortable seats and state of the art digital projection as well as Analog Projection and Dolby digital sound. The foyer outside the preview theatre is big enough to accommodate a party of around 50 people and can be easily used for a birthday party. To book the foyer, a fee of Rs. 5000 is charged. To screen the movie, another fee of Rs. 5000 – 7500 is charged. The client needs to get their own movie. 4. Birthday party on open deck bus

Birthday party on an open deck bus sounds really exciting. Fresh air, cool breeze and lots of masti on an open double decker bus gives a lot of thrill to the little minds, the only catch is it costs around Rs. 50,000. This is a little expensive but a very good idea to make the birthday for your child special. The open deck bus party lasts for a little over 2 hours as it goes around the city with the friends and family. It includes, light snacks, balloon decoration, photo cut-outs of the birthday boy/girl pasted on the bus, along with a game host and some music. This is best for a group of 40 people. You can choose between two routes:

South Mumbai – From Nariman point to Sealink

Surbub- From Bandra Talao to Juhu beach

In fact, MTDC also conducts open air deck bus birthday parties which includes sight-seeing like Gateway of India, Vidhan Bhavan, Marine Drive, Eros Theatre, and more from the top level of an open-air bus. But it is operational only between October to May. It is much more affordable and educational option. For more details call Nos.  2284 5678 (5 Lines).

5. Dolphin Aquarium visit in Irla followed by McDonald’s  or Taraporewala Aquarium in Marine Drive or Museum visit in Colaba followed by KFC

2013-09-08

Arrange for a transport and take the birthday boy/girl to either Dolphin Aquarium visit in Irla or Chattrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sanghralay Museum in Colaba. Hire a guide during museum visit so that children get their queries answered and understand the importance of our history. This visit can be followed by some snacks, drinks and cake cutting in a nearby café. There are many in that area. Book one in advance.

If your child loves animals and nature then this small Dolphin Aquarium in the middle of a lake outing with his/her friends will make their birthday memorable. There’s plenty of seating arrangements, a toy train and a play area for the kids.  It’s perfect for an afternoon stroll on a pleasant day or in early evenings when the property is lit up with lights. There is a snacks counter so you can purchase snacks and drinks for the kids there. Cake cutting can be done there as well or inside the mini-bus. (Decorate the mini-bus with balloons and ribbons) For more information you can call Tel: 9892689668, 9322161228, Hours: Open on all days, 10:00-21:00

Also, under refurbishment Taraporewala Aquarium in Marine Drive is another good option. The children will squeal in amazement when they see various species of sea-life. It houses about 70 marine and 40 freshwater species, many of them available locally and exotic fish like Azure Damsel, Purple Firefish, Blue Ribbon Eel, Frontosa and Red Devil, etc. They have also planned a fish spa for all the visitors containing warm water and dozens of doctor or nibble fish, who gently nibble away at dry and dead skin, leaving the feet refreshed. There have planned two touch pools for children where they would be able to touch harmless marine animals like the sea urchin, sea cucumber, starfish and turtles. Fitted with modern flexi glass and LED lights, it will be a visual delight to the young observers. It will also house a tunnel aquarium at the entrance, much smaller but similar to the one at the Singapore’s SEA Aquarium. This visit can be followed by snacks and drinks in a nearby café. (****still under renovation, will be up by January 2015). For more information call 22822312.
