Mumbaigloss was recently invited to taste at Guilt Trip, a patisserie. It is owned by mother-daughter duo Shenaz and Sheeba Hassan, who established this cake shop two years back. And since then, there has been no looking back for them. Guilt Trip is bang on the busy Carter Road in Khar next to a popular ice-cream parlour and is frequented by urban teens in the locality. I went on a weekday evening and found that it was pretty busy.

I spoke to Farhan, the store manager, who told me that their best selling product is the red-velvet cake with California cream topping. He told me that the rich colour of red-velvet cake comes from beetroot and cranberry juice and no artificial colours are used to get that effect. The red velvet cake comes in two varieties – one with California cream and other with sugar frosting. Sugar frosting looks much beautiful as it can be played around with various colours and textures. Though while tasting it, I felt it was granulated and like a lump of sweet paste but the cake was spongy and soft. Red-velvet cake with California cream felt absolutely delicious. It was soft, flavourful with mildly sweet creamy icing and soft cake as the base. Farhan said that this particular topping melts very fast and needs to be consumed faster than the regular icing. Also, red-velvet cake with California cream was available in a jar and I felt that it was a better option when on the go or if traveling far.

Apart from this, they sell a variety of cupcakes in various flavours like carrot, red velvet, Oreo cookie, strawberry, pina colada, chocolate, etc. Bite size mini-cupcakes are also available in those flavours. Tiny and colourful cupcakes instantly caught my fancy. Just look at them. How cute they look. How could I eat them? I didn’t try them all but found that mini red-velvet cupcakes were no less that the jar version. Cookies and cream, and blue velvet were also good. They provide both eggless and regular version to cater to various customers.

I also tried their macarons. Most of them were sold out by the time I reached. Farhan said that they make two batches of products; one comes in the morning when they open and the next lot comes in the afternoon which usually sells out by closing time. I am glad that fresh products are sold at Guilt Trip that explains their taste and freshness. But when I tasted the macarons I found that they lacked the melt-in-the-mouth effect that I was expecting. Recently, I tasted Theobroma mini-macarons and found them much tastier than the ones at Guilt Trip, especially the fruity ones. Having said that, it still seems to be one of the best-sellers there.

I asked them if they undertook customized birthday cake orders and Farhan told me that they not only take cake orders but also take party orders if told in advance. A customized cake can cost anywhere between Rs. 300 to Rs. 2000 depending upon the design and products used. The prices of other products vary between Rs. 20 to Rs. 200. I saw a customized cake being made live at their counter.

I also saw Banofie Pie, Caramel Cheesecake, Strawberry Cheesecake, Baked Chocolate cheesecake and many other varieties of goodies. I certainly wanted to try them all but of course I wasn’t prepared to go on a guilt trip after that. The store has some seating arrangements just outside its premises.

The patisserie’s decor is young and lively. If you stay around Union Park, or are visiting Carter Road then this can definitely fix your sweet tooth. It is a good option if you want to pop-in only for some desserts but don’t expect any fire-works.
