Latest fashion trend – metallic fabric like gold and silver at Lakme Fashion Week Summer/Resort 2014

Last week was pretty hectic for Mumbaigloss. Of course, we were busy with Lakme Fashion Week Summer/Resort 2014 at Grand Hyatt in Mumbai. What an amazing time we had hobnobbing with the fashion fraternity. The week presented few of the best designers from across the country and showcased their exclusive designs at the ramp. Reputed names like Rajesh Pratap Singh, Manish Malhotra, Neeta Lulla, Shantanu & Nikhil and many others participated over 6 days of fashion and glamour. New names like Mandira Bedi, Dorothy Perkins and others were also seen foraying into the Indian fashion scene. And what did we observe? Lots of fashion trends which can be easily emulated from ramp to reality. Though, I myself am a little averse to light reflecting elements but many designers freely used metallic colors, mirrors, sequence and shiny fabric at Lakme Fashion Week Summer/Resort 2014.  Gold and silver ruled the ramp.

This trend might not be apt in the hot and humid summers of Mumbai; but if used moderately it might add to the glam appeal which is perfect for a party or any celebration. The idea is to “shine out” from the remaining crowd. Tastefully designed silver gown from Dorothy Perkins made Kangna Ranaut look like a yester year Hollywood star. She looked like a goddess scorching the ramp in her silver gown. Not only Dorothy Perkins, even renowned designer Rajesh Pratap Singh freely used silver and other metallic hues in his Grand Finale Collection. Even men were not spared from silver and gold fabrics in his collection. Kareena Kapoor had everyone spell bound with her oomph and seductive aura in the black and silver gown. It had a futuristic appeal. Rajesh Pratap Singh also used mirrors in this collection, a recent trend which was sported by Hollywood beauty Jennifer Lawrence at the Oscars. Payal Khandwala used silver arm band/cuff to add the zing to her color blocked Indian wear with white blouse. Mawi’s Indian Odyssey used golden fabric abundantly with tribal accessories giving the collection an enchanting feel.  Raven + Rose, Kommal Sood, Anushka Khanna, Papa Don’t Preach Me, Ashmita Marwa, Rajat Tangri and many others used the metallic colors lavishly.

Now you must be wondering, how not to go overboard with metallic for your everyday dressing. If it’s a day wear, keep the metallic hues minimal. If the fabric has metallic colors, strictly keep your makeup simple. You can pair white and yellow (one of the popular trends at LFW) with a slim golden/silver waist belt and metallic strappy sandals. You can wear a metallic waist coat over your cotton white shirt to sport this trend. You can also add the glam factor by wearing a metallic head band with your day wear.

For evening wear you can experiment with any metallic color, sequence work, crystal work, etc. as long as the fabric is flowy and natural. Don’t go for very heavy fabrics which might make you look like an astronaut.  Try and keep your accessories to the minimum. Makeup can be goth or nude as per the shade you are wearing. (Light shades like silver, pearly whites can opt for goth and dark shades can opt for nude makeup).
