Makeup tips from Priyanka Chopra’s stylist Uday Shirali

I recently saw Kim Kardashian’s face (not butt) sans makeup and thought that makeup does wonders to her face. She does have a pretty face but makeup makes her look incredibly glamorous. Few are naturally beautiful with flawless skin and nymph like features, but for others there is always a makeup artist. A good makeup artist transforms an average face into a glam diva. They are like artists who create masterpieces on the canvas of face. They are these magicians who turn a pauper into a princess.

And Mumbaigloss got an opportunity to interview one such magician, who is lovingly called Uday Dada in the film industry. Uday Shirali has worked with many Bollywood biggies in his career spanning more than 15 years and is currently associated with Priyanka Chopra. Let’s know more about the man behind that pretty face of the starlet.

(Psst! He has shared makeup tips for you girls. Do I see a few of you break into a crazy jig?)

MG: Hi Uday dada, I am so glad that you decided to speak to Mumbaigloss.in.  You are currently working with Priyanka on Bajirao Mastani and have also done her makeup in Mary Kom, Barfi, Agneepath, Raamleela, Gunday, etc. Since when have you been associated with this industry? How did you start?

Uday: I started my career as an artist. I used to paint, make greetings and sketches so I have always been from the creative field. One of my friends saw my work and told that I should try hands on make-up. That’s when I was introduced to Bollywood’s veteran makeup artist, dada Pandhari Juker who was already a big name in the film industry. He is my Guru and I owe my career to him. I have learnt everything from him. Under his guidance, I got a chance to work with leading beauties of Bollywood from Madhubala to Madhuri Dixit. I used to not earn much at that time; just mere Rs. 50 a day. I would save that money and buy make-up products. It was Pooja Bhatt who gave me first break as an independent make-up artist in her movie ‘Zakhm’.

MG: Oh that’s interesting! How many Bollywood artists have you worked with till now? Who has got the best features which you have accentuated with your makeup?

Uday: Later, I bagged more projects and worked with many actress like Sushmita Sen, Tabu, Mahima Chaudhry , Preity Zinta helped me gain confidence in my work. I had styled Sushmita Sen for the song ‘Mehboob Mere’ from the movie Fiza that got me immense appreciation. That was a turning point in my career. I think Sushmita is a very pretty actress; she has got the best features.

MG:  Indeed! Sushmita looked ethereal in that song.  Can you give us a few tips so that even we can look as good as her?

Uday: Why not!

MG: Indian women face certain problems like unclear skin (brown spots, blemishes, under-eye dark circles, etc.) How can they create a flawless base?

Uday: Most of the Indians suffer from unclear skin. To create a flawless base select your favorite liquid foundation and pick a dense, flat top brush and dip it into the foundation. Dab this onto your nose, cheeks, around the edges of your face, and neck. Buff the foundation into your skin until it’s flawless but don’t be too harsh. Gently apply a primer and softly apply concealer under the eyes. This will give desired flawless skin. You can go for products like foundation by NARS, Christian Dior, Becca brushes, etc. I don’t think I can do without Chanel’s foundation. They are the best ones.

MG: Awesome! So you mean to say that foundation should be used before concealer. I always used to do it the other way round. Can you also tell us which lipsticks are best suited for Indian skin tone?

Uday: Peach and pink coloured lip glosses are the best for Indian skin tone. Red glossy lipsticks give Indian beauties a glamorous look. Chocolate, deep plum or sultry red is the best selection for a dark skin. Caramel or warm peach lip colours look good during the daytime and wine coloured shades will be the best for night-time. You can also add orange and coral. Avoid chalky colours with darker skin tones as they are too contrasting.

MG: Thank you for this tip! I completely agree that lipsticks should be selected as per your skin tone otherwise the skin looks dull. Can you please suggest an easy day look and a night look?

Uday: During the day time you just need to look more pretty and polished. A smooth skin with foundation and rosy cheeks is all that you have to do to make your face look gorgeous. You just need a dash of lip-gloss and mascara to complete the look.

By night your skin is dehydrated. Moisturizing foundation will make you look fresh. Gold shimmer powder is something you should wear on your cheekbones, brow bones and décolletage which gives to a bold and sexy look.  You can use Makeup Forever’s eye shadows to create a smokey eye effect.

Super! Now we can apply these tips to create easy makeup looks. Thank you Uday dada for giving us this invaluable information. So girls, next time you are going out, try to apply these tips and do let me know if it was helpful.
