Ranbir Kapoor: King of item numbers in Bollywood

This is my first post for 2014 and I wanted it to be fun, unique and entertaining. And then I thought what could be more entertaining than Bollywood? It just so happened that in this holiday season I managed to peek into the latest Bollywood songs on a TV channel and realised that there are many Bollywood item numbers which were doing the rounds in the party circuit. Christmas party, New Year party, Birthday party, pubs, lounges; every one is playing these tracks.

Bollywood churns out item numbers with each new movie release. Some are instant hit and a few fizzle out. (For the novice to Bollywood, an item number is a song and dance programme where actors define what dreams are made up of with their OTT costumes, makeup, dance moves, exotic locales, massive sets, etc.) But what is similar in all these dance and music rigmarole is a top notch actor (usually a lead heroine) dancing amongst hundreds of dancers, with majestic sets and to the most aerobic beats. Her costumes, her makeup, her dance moves, everything is kept loud, sensual and eye catching.

But it’s not just women who are projected as the object of desire in Bollywood movies. Many men have also jumped on to the bandwagon and are eagerly performing these so called ‘item numbers’ to seduce the women folk, who constitute a big chunk of the movie going mass. Be it Ranbir Kapoor, Ranvir Singh, Akshay Kumar, Shahrukh Khan, Salman Khan or John Abraham; these actors have performed solo or dual acts which can be easily termed as ‘item number’ by men.

But who gets the crown of the ‘KING of Bollywood item numbers’? In my opinion, it is Ranbir Kapoor who has done maximum item numbers in the industry in the recent times. (I am not counting the days when Govinda would entice the audiences with his thumkas or Mithun would lure the movie goers with his disco moves). In the past five years, Ranbir has made maximum solo acts, carrying the responsibility of an entire item number and entertainment on his novice shoulders. His signature move, the posterior push outs are seriously the one that makes us laugh as well as love at the same time. (Really? What about the pelvic thrusts and chest pop outs?)

He started his career with Saawariya where his towel dropping act in the song ‘Jab se tere naina’ has gone up in the golden pages of Bollywood history.

And since then, he hasn’t stopped this trend of appearing in the movies as the tantalizing mover and shaker. Anyway, many women go weak at their knees with his true blue Punjabi good looks and his cute-guy-next-door image but what amazes me about him is that he never stops to reinvent himself, to experiment with something new and thankfully he can act as well. (His rebellion act in Rockstar speaks volumes about his acting ability, and may be that was the only good thing about the movie other than some soul stirring music. Rajneeti, Barfi, Wake up Sid are no less a feat.) He is someone who could match up to the steps of the dancing queen Madhuri Dixit in the song Ghaghra from Yeh Jawani Hai Diwani.

Not only that, Philips LED advert has him doing another show stopping act with Shruti Hasan where he is dancing retro style like Amitabh Bachchan in ‘Saara Zamaana’.

Here is a list of top 10 item numbers (not in any particular order) by Bollywood actors in the last few years and you decide for yourself if Ranbir Kapoor is the KING of item numbers or not?

1.  Badtameez Dil from Yeh Jawani Hai Diwani

2. Besharam from the movie Besharam

3.  Tai tai phis from the movie Chillar Party

4. Tattad Tattad – Ramji ki chaal dekho from the movie Ramleela

Move over girls, item boys are here, and are here to stay!
