Warm up to winter fashion

Winters are knocking at our door and it is time to pull out our winter wear. Yes, the bulky jackets, pullovers, turtlenecks, woollen caps, shrugs, etc. I know many of you are cringing at the very thought of wearing these items. But dear fashionistas, a girl needs to fight the chill as well, right? With stylish winter wear currently available in the market, it’s not that bad as it seems, trust me! A decade ago Indian fashion embraced parkas, overcoats, warm shrugs, beanies and a lot other fashionable accessories to keep us warm so there is no dearth of warm winter wear items that can make us look like leading ladies from Kjo movies. Well, he has come a long way since he made Kajol wear a skimpy red dress in powdery swiss snow for DDLJ (Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge). The latest flick from Karan Johar had Aishwarya and Anushka rock the most stylish winter wear while roaming the streets of Vienna. So let’s take a cue from them and list a few select pieces which can bring out the diva in us this winter.

1. Biker/Bomber leather jacket: The bohemian style of Anushka was well complimented with long kurta, leather bomber jacket, kohled eyes, ethnic silver jhumkas, boots with black quilted bomber jacket. Her care free spirit came out on-screen effortlessly. She defied rules so her look can be pulled off by all rebels at heart women. In the past Kareena Kapoor had also sported boots with kurta and ethnic jewellery for the movie Gabbar is Back. If you are one of those people who like to create their own style without blindly following fashion then this look is for you.

2. Overcoats/Parkas: Aishwarya’s impeccable, sophisticated and ultra-stylish look is ageless in the movie Ae Dil Hai Mushkil. Those long floor length parkas and furry overcoats are a staple to every stylish woman in the world. Teamed with high heeled boots her parkas projected a confident, beautiful woman who knows what she wants. Smokey eyes added to the intrigue. This look is for women who are professionals and mature in their outlook. I loved her look in the movie.

3. Shrugs/Sweater: Cover up in style with shrugs and sweaters for women available at various stores in your vicinity. Be it Sarojini Nagar market, online stores like Myntra or highstreet fashion brands like Only, Vero Moda, Desigual, etc. you will find your stylish sweaters for women here. Don’t frown as these could help you fight light to moderate chill in the air as well as help you layer efficiently so that you can control the exposure to low temperatures with ease. First put on soft comfy top, try to put a cardigan over it and on top you can go for shrugs and warm stoles or scarves. The idea is to layer clothes so that you can control your body temperature as per the outside temperature.

4. Scarves/stoles: Infinity scarves are trending as well as warm stoles are getting popular in the areas that do not see extreme shift in temperatures. Mumbai is one of those cities which doesn’t see much change in temperature. The climate remains moderate throughout the year. December and January seem pleasantly cooler than other months. That is when stoles and scarves come handy to beat the early morning chill. Pop colour scarves are in this season. Look how effortlessly chic Anushka is looking in this scarf.

5. Boots: Boots!!! Do I need to say more? Wear them with anything and everything. Period! They look cool, they are warm and comfortable. What else does a girl need? See how Anushka has paired them with leather look tights and winter coat.

6. Caps/ Beanies: There are ample of options in this segment. From flowery, crocheted, girly headgears to tomboyish leather look caps. I wore one last year while on my Eurotrip. Check it out here. It is very important to keep your head warm in protective caps during extreme winters.

7. Gloves: I love the sleek leather ones which has a faux fur lining inside it. Those are soft, warm, water proof and stay forever. Recently, I bought a pair for Rs. 600 at Dharavi Leather market and those look amazing.

Did I miss out on something? Do let me know. Till then stay stylish and happy this winter.
