What happens after cysteine treatment/ hair relaxing? My personal story

Dry ends, hair looking like hay after a lot of styling abuse and you wonder what you can do to make them look healthy and shiny again. You go to your hair stylist who suggests Cysteine Keratin treatment for your hair. Of course, it doesn’t come cheap. The total amount spent on the treatment and the supporting products will easily cost your around Rs. 11, 000. So is it worth it? Let’s find out.

I went through the Cysteine treatment on 3rd April, 2015. I purposefully waited for three and a half months to give you a first-hand account as to what happens during and after the treatment. My natural hair was straight, glossy and fine during my college days. It had a lot of volume. But over a period of time, with irregular hair spas or oiling and N number of product applications like hair colour, hair spray, etc. on them, my hair started to look a lot wavy, dry and lifeless. The ombre hair colour made the ends of my hair very dry. They were on the verge of getting split ends. That’s when I decided it was time to do something about it. I went to Enrich Salon where the senior stylist suggested that I go for the Cysteine treatment (Of course, they always suggest an expensive treatment but it is up to us to decide if it is really going to be worth it). Not many know that it is a protein treatment for your hair which relaxes its texture like curls and waves. It doesn’t straighten them though. It gives a very natural smooth finish to your hair texture making them look more polished.

So, I decided to give it a go. The treatment is called Cysteine Complex Intense Smoothening. My hair is below shoulders so they quoted Rs. 7500 for my treatment. The rest of Rs. 3500 was spent towards the after care products. The stylist got me a paper to sign which had its terms and conditions stating that the treatment lightens the colour of the hair by 2 shades, it won’t make my hair completely straight etc. Finally, he took me to the wash basin where he washed my hair with a special shampoo that helps to remove every iota of dirt and oil from the hair. Basically, it strips down your hair completely from any possible product residues, natural oil, and gunk. My hair was then blow dried. It looked strayed, dry and weak. I felt very bad looking at their condition.

Then he got the Amazon Cysteine Complex Smoothening Cream and started applying on my hair section by section. The procedure is same as when a hair cream is applied to your hair during a hair spa. He left one inch hair from my root and applied the cream to the rest of the hair till the end. It is done so that the cream doesn’t make the roots go soft which eventually may result in hair fall.

After applying the cream to all my hair he wound it up in a clear plastic film. He ensured that my hair didn’t have any folds or creases. After about half an hour he came back to check my hair and removed the clear film. He took my semi-wet-with-cream hair section by section and with the help of a hair straightener, started drying up my hair. Towards the end of it my hair looked poker straight which had a strange little smell and of course product deposit. I was asked not to wash my hair for two to three days.

After that, I was allowed to wash my hair with three specific products that the stylist recommended– De Fabulous Hair Repair Shampoo, De Fabulous Hair Repair Conditioner, and Amazon Series Acai Oil Treatment. My stylist told me that these products should last me for over a month and I will see the condition of my hair get better with regular use.  He said the hair will stay smooth for a period of 3 – 4 months post this treatment.

I left the salon with a heavy heart and an empty pocket. But I told myself, it was worth the investment. Rs. 11, 000 divided by 4 months comes to Rs. 2750 per month which is ok if not bad for healthy looking hair.

Moisturizing shampoo, Amazon range of products, Cysteine treatment, hair Smoothening

I washed my hair with the shampoo on the third day. It is a very mild shampoo and my hair felt icky and was still smelling of the product. The conditioner weighed my hair down for the first few washes as it is full of moisturizing elements. Combined with freshly done protein treatment, my hair looked limp. But in later washes it made my hair feel very soft. The stylist asked me to leave the conditioner in my hair for at least 5 minutes before washing it off. It actually makes the hair feel smooth and soft. I think I will continue with this conditioner even after the Cysteine effect wears off. Amazon Series Acai Oil Treatment smells wonderful. I was advised to apply it to my hair roots post hair wash and before styling on towel dried hair. I was asked to take a few drops of the oil on my palm, warm it up a bit on my hand and then apply to the roots which will give it amazing shine and fragrance. It definitely makes me feel good. I started using all the products regularly. The shampoo was over in a month. The conditioner and the Acai Oil are still there. I started using mild shampoo from other brands to wash my hair. Till now my hair looks straight (not poker straight but natural straight). Slight waves have started appearing towards the ends but it looks polished and smooth for sure.

Cysteine treatment is one of the safest hair treatments in the market with excellent results. If you are unsure about how it will react, go for a patch test. Though it is expensive but it surely makes the hair smooth and soft. Many might feel that they have lost hair volume after the treatment but usually it is because straight hair looks less in volume than wavy or curly hair. So, if you are looking for a dramatic change in your looks or just want to fix your unruly hair then you can try this treatment.

  1. Can you please help me with your advice
I took cysteine treatment exactly a month ago and 60% of the effect is already gone.
After seeing your air dried hair after 3 months ,I am surprised as I have got my curls back in just a month.i am left with total disappointment.i am done with amazon shampoos ,also I am facing dryness so i wanted to change shampoo, can you suggest some to not to lose the remaining cysteine effect, thanks in advance.

    • Hi Priya,

My natural hair was straight to wavy so you can say that they are slowing getting back to what they were before. May be your natural hair are on the curly side so that’s why the curls are back soon. Currently, I am using Tresseme For Straight Hair and De Fabulous hair conditioner. Take good amount of the conditioner and let it stay in your hair for at least 5 minutes. Wash your hair with cold water. Also try to put home made hair pack made from curd and honey for 30 minutes in your hair to remove dryness. I use it instead of egg pack as eggs smell very bad. But to tell you the truth, they are excellent in treating dry hair.

  2. Hi, my experience with this product is opposite! i am experiencing heavy hair fall and i agree with Priya, the effect goes off immediately. i will not recommend this treatment to anyone for sure.

  3. Oh that is bad Sonia. You should talk to the salon where you got the treatment done.

  4. hello mumbai gloss
i agree with your review on the treatment. i have been doing cystiene since a year and half now and i just love the way it looks. but i have always had hair problems. my hair are extremely fine and thin. i am facing hair loss also. but biggest of my problems is that my hair turns irritatingly oily right the next day after the wash. so as a result i have to wash my hair every alternate day on some occasions nearly daily. so please suggest me of a solution to this as i am really of oily hair. i wish to continue cystiene every three months but if u suggest some other treatments i dont mind giving it a try. also let me kno if i could use home made packs on cystiene treated hair.

    • Hi Rupal, thankyou for writing in. Oily roots can be sign of harmonal imbalance, other health issues so its best to consult a trichologist. Also, if you have a job where you are constantly travelling and exposed to dirt and pollution then your hair tends to become dry and roots become oily. So to counter oil production keep your hair well moisturised. Don’t wash them more than 3 times a week. Weekly, give a hair spa at home with coconut oil and steam. Use a leave in conditioner and on top of it, eat protein rich food. If your diet is bad then it affects your hair.

  5. Hi Rupal, My natural hair is wavy to curly and frizzy at the crown. I did a cystiene treatment last week and am already seeing the effect wear off. The parlour said that my hair is relaxed now and thats how the effect willl be for my kind of hair. I am very disaapointed that i spent so much and the effect didnt even ladt for a month. Is there any way to retain /prolong the cystiene effect for wavy to curly hair.

  6. I’m desiring for the very hyped Pompadaur but I have wavy hair due to which the hair doesn’t fall the way it should. The saloon guy suggested Cysteine. Obviously the Keratin will make me look Champu. What do you suggest???

  7. Hi.. After reading your article I have decided to go ahead with cysteine treatment. Just one question? What about hair fall.. Does this accelerate it?

  8. Hello Parimita, Thanks for the blog on cysteine. After doing quite a search on hair treatments, finally zeroed with Cysteine. Although it is on the higher end than other hair treatment, felt it is less harmful than products used while doing keratein, smoothening or straightening. Have done it thrice in the last three years and can feel the difference. I really liked the steps you have mentioned in the blog above and feels it is very helpful for gurls as I knw it was quite challenging and confusing for me initially to think whether and which hair treatment I should be doing for my tresses as we may find people in Salon being pushy to the clients who are naïve about the products. Great work! thank you!

  9. Hi Parimita, Thanks for the info on Cysteine– been contemplating on doing it for a while now. Which Enrich salon did you do it in? any particular stylist ?

  10. The review sounds helpful..even my stylist suggested me same..but a bit confused.can u tell me what is the condition of your hair now after treatment.

  11. HI..can you please guide me from where did u buy Acai Hair Oil. I stay in Mumbai.

  12. Hi ma’am
Please let me know that the effect of this treatment stays for how long?
    Thank you

  13. Thanks for the review Parimita, I trusted your words and went to enrich salon Aundh Pune for this treatment. Loved the way they attended customer and they clearly told me about the various options available and result I will get. I chose this treatment and it was worth. My hair are manageable and with smooth texture which earlier used to be dry and frizzy… Its just 4 days, I will have to see how long the result will sustain and also if there is any negative impact on the hair in long run; like hair fall.
But thumbs up for your true review

  14. hi i took this treatment at lakme, they called me in to wash my hair after 24 hours. My hair looked great for 3 days. but then when i washed my hair again after 3 days with the shampoo & conditioner prescribed i feel no difference in hair its looks like i havnt got any treatment done.

  15. I was thinking to go for this treatment for a long time now but was not sure but after reading your article I am encouraged to go for it. I am also thinking to colour my hair before I do the Cysteine Treatment.

  16. Hey, did you get your first hair wash done from the salon itself?

It has now been over 2 years since you did the treatment. How is you hair? Is it damaged in any way? Or is it healthier that before the treatment? Do you regret getting the treatment?

    Best regards
