Top 6 free fashion apps for Indian fashionistas on Android

My OH has been complaining off late that I spend too much time on my smart phone. Can I help it? May be not! Apart from social networking, blogging, etc.; I also search for quick fashion fixes whenever I am going out. In fact, Whatsapp has become my go-to app. If I am confused between two shoes, I ping my sister with the images to get her opinion. The Whatsapp groups I have joined keep on buzzing with what’s in and out of trend. And that’s not all. Many a times I have a quick chat with my mum regarding what will look better on me. (If I should wear a pink or a deep red lipstick with gold brocades saree).

That’s when I thought, which are the fashion apps available in the Android market that can be helpful to a fashion enthusiast like me? After a few downloads and testing, I could list these:

1. Trendabl (Social Networking for fashionistas): It is like Instagram and Facebook for the fashion freaks who would love to network with other fashionistas around the world. Upload a photo, filter it and tag it to allow users to browse photos by categories such as skirts, swimwear, or shoes. With Trendabl you can tag what you’re wearing based on label, price and availability. You can also browse others’ outfits and get some style inspiration.

2. The Womens Store (shopping app organizer and memory saver): A fashionista always wants to get the best deals on the most trending clothes and accessories and for that she needs to visit various online stores. But downloading each and every app of these online stores is plain cumbersome and will consume your mobile data and storage space. That is when you can download The Womens Store. This app is your shopping app organizer. Rather than downloading each and every app of your favourite store and cluttering your mobile top, you can simply download this one and then visit various stores as and when required. American Swan, Fashion and You, Jabong, Myntra, Fashionara, Provogue, Yebhi, Zivame, Koovs and a lot more online stores have been linked through this app. Apart from shopping; it also lists sites for food, travel, jewellery, books, etc. You can also get some fashion inspiration from these sites. And in case, you thought that you will miss out on the deal alerts, then this app also lists promotional emails where you can keep a tab on the sales and promotions happening across these sites.

3. Styledotme (Network, create timed polls): Meghna Saraogi is the founder of this app, who like us was always confused while shopping. Sometimes, friend’s opinion becomes very important while purchasing an accessory worth thousands and that’s when this app comes handy. You can upload images of two products and create an instant poll. The poll can be further enhanced with a timer (Like I need advice in the next five minutes) and then your friends can quickly give their vote. You can also add image-enhancing filters to your photos and share your posts with your friends on Facebook and Twitter. You can follow your friends, favorite celebrities, brands and bloggers on this app. I checked this app which is relatively new. Not much feeds from other users available. The real fun will begin only once your set of friends create an account on this app and start using it regularly.

4. Flipboard/Magzter (Read fashion articles): Yes! With a bit of customization you can follow and get feeds from Vogue India, Harper’s Bazar, W Magazine, Glamour, etc. You can get street style, celebrity style and other popular feeds right into your smart phone. It’s for those who are hooked on to reading fashion magazines and are always on the lookout for what’s new and trending from the editor’s table. Unfortunately, not many Indian magazines feeds are available with this app. Yet, the interface is beautiful, user-friendly and easy to read. Magzter app gets you access to free copies of Noblesse India issues which is a glossy fashion and lifestyle magazine. (True at the time of publishing this article.) You can download the soft copy of the magazine on your android device and read it at leisure.

5. Miss India app (know your beauty queens and beauty pageants): Get latest updates gossips news features and photos of your favourite Miss India’s on the go. Also get access to information on prestigious international beauty pageants like Miss Universe, Miss Asia Pacific, etc. Even you can vote for your favourite contestants during Miss India competition. Browse through photos, watch videos, even you can apply for the next pageant through this app. It’s incredible that such information is accessible at your fingertips. All those dreaming to become the next ‘Miss India’ will find this app very handy.

6. Mydressing: (Create personal lookbook with existing wardrobe or new additions). So you never knew that your grey T-shirt from Zara would look great with your red cotton pencil skirt you bought from Linking Road. Yes, it’s a discovery after a year of having purchased those things. It happens to many of us. But what if we had the option of mixing and matching clothes virtually, creating looks and instant references for future? I know it will be a blessing not to struggle early morning while rushing to office if we know in advance, what we would like to wear to office. With this app you can cut out the clothes (jacket, tee, dresses, etc.) from an image and put them on a look board along with accessories, makeup, shoes, etc. for quick reference, next time you are going out.

I am waiting for an app like Snapette or Pose to be launched in India listing Indian brands and stores. It uses GPS info to help you discover what’s out there in the stores around you. Also, you can get a real-time view of what millions of other fashionistas are finding stylish in major cities. For style inspiration from major fashion bloggers across the country, I am waiting for Stylepile to create an Android app which will be a hit with Indian fashion enthusiasts.

Many designers like Rajesh Pratap Singh, Pia Pauro, Payal Pratap, Gauri & Nainika and Anupama Dayal have already launched their own apps in the Android market. The users are able to preview the collections at the comfort of their own smart phone.

After smart phones and useful apps, the face of fashion is certainly going to change in India.

  1. While its good that Voonik shows me only the stylist-handpicked stuff that suits me, it lacks the social lookbook feature on their website. Their android app is so very interesting though.
